This week I read the Tales of a Parrot section. I found this
section to be very similar to the Aladdin stories I read last week. A common
theme I saw between the two was the storytelling plotline and the unfaithful
wife. I found it very interesting that they decided to portray women in this
light, because I feel like in general when you hear about someone in a
relationship cheating, that it is the man who is unfaithful. I found that topic
to be very interesting.
The other, and probably most prevalent similarity was the
theme of storytelling. The Tales from a Parrot was similar to Aladdin in that,
all of the stories are being told to occupy someone from committing a terrible
crime. In Aladdin, the wife told stories to keep her husband from killing her
in the morning. In the Tales of a Parrot, the Parrot is telling stories to keep
the wife from leaving the house to cheat on her husband.
Unfortunately, I was only able to do half of the reading
this week. From what I did read though, the bird was very witty, and I personally
think that the wife was a complete idiot. I chose this reading because I had
read about it last week in someone else’s blog. I thought they had done a great
job with it, and I was intrigued enough to read it myself. Overall, I really
liked it and would suggest it to someone else. Some of the stories felt kind of
random, and I had trouble relating it back to the characters, and fully
understanding the plot, however, most of the stories were very straightforward
and had great underlying messages in them. I only wish that I would have been
able to read the second half of the readings.
