Martyr. She is imprisoned for refusing to marry a city
official because he was not Christian. While in prison she is visited by the
devil in disguise. While in prison she was also tortured in the cruelest of
ways. Beaten with rods and hung by her hair. The devil which had visited her
said he was sent by Beezlebub to overcome her. She conversed with him and asked
him what exactly he does. He told her of all the horrible things he did and
that if he didn’t do them that he himself would be tortured.
In order to kill her, they tried to rip her body apart, but
an angel healed her. They then tried to put her in a pot of boiling lead, but
when she got in the pot, the pot became cold and she was perfectly fine.
And then they went to behead her. The devil appeared and
egged on the scene. She praying while beheaded and all of those who caused this
awful scene, were drowned at sea shortly after.
Lived 47 years in the desert. When she was praying to God
one day, Zosimus witnessed her levitate. She had a past where she left home at
the age of 12 and for 17 years she did nothing but sin. She had, “refused no
man”. She had gone at one point to worship a cross and was refused. She
realized it was for her sins and began praying. She asked for forgiveness and
promised to live a chaste life. She went back to the church to worship the
cross and this time had no problem entering.
It was there that someone gave her some money, and she went and bought
three loaves of bread with it. She then went into the desert and lived off of
the bread for 17 years.
Zosimus found her in the desert and she told him to leave
and get the Eucharist and come back a year later. He did and she told him to
leave and come back a year later. When he did, he found her dead.
Next to her dead body was a note saying she died two days
after receiving Christ (the Eucharist). Zosimus buried her and then went back
to the abbey.
She was so chaste that she refused to be around men. She was
supposed to then marry a very noble man. On the night of her wedding, she hid
from her husband because she was convinced that letting go of her virginity
would put her in a life of filth. So at midnight she chopped off her hair and
put on the uniform of a monk. She went to a monastery and began to be taught
the ways of a monk, although they still thought she was a man.
Then a woman nearby became pregnant and people assumed it
was Pelagien since he (she) knew the woman. So they kicked Pelagien out and
basically put her in exile. While she was there, she accepted her fate and
wrote them a letter to explain that she was a woman trying to escape the loss
of innocence and was not in any way an adulterer. When the monks and nuns
discovered this, they felt horrible and buried her in the church, “with the
virgins honorably”.
This was a very odd and confusing story. But it kind of
reminds me of the movie She’s the Man, because a woman is pretending to be a
man. Of course their motives are extremely different.
This is the story of a mother and her child trying to escape
persecution. At one point the mother is being beaten and the child is weeping,
and trying to escape. The child bit the provst and the provst got so mad that
he threw the child down the stairs. The child’s head broken open and his brains
went everywhere (Very brutal). The boy went to heaven. Thereafter, Juliet was
to be burned and beheaded.
In another version, apparently the child, although only
three was very wise and yelled that he was a Christian while he was being
beaten.
The child dying was too much for me. I did not like this
story for that reason.
Marine’s father joined a monastery after the death of
Marine’s mother and disguised her as a boy so she would be accepted among the
men. They lived there for many years, and when her father was on his death bed
he told her it would be best if she never reveal her true gender. She was 27 at
the time. Later, while living at the monastery she would often go to fetch wood
and stay at the house of a woman who had conceived a child by a Knight. For
this reason, Marine was charged with fathering the child. When approached about
it, rather than revealing her true gender, she asked for forgiveness.
Marine was kicked out and lived at the gate for three years
after that. Then the child was sent to her, where she took care of it for two
years. Later, she died and it was then they discovered her true gender. They
then punished the child’s mother who lied and said it was Marine.
She was a princess. A man sent for her because he wanted her
to be his wife. When he asked her what religion she was, she responded
Christian, which was an issue with him. He then sent her to prison for her
beliefs. They then tortured and beat her. While in prison the devil appeared to
her in a dragon form. One version says it only appeared, the other says it swallowed
her and she survived and made it leave by making the sign of the cross. Soon
after she met a devil named Veltis who told her of his evil doings. They burned
her and then put her in boiling water. When she was in the water, a dove came
down from heaven and placed a crown on her head. Then 5,000 people believed in
God instantly. All of which, were
beheaded thereafter, including Margaret.
She was so beautiful that her father locked her away in a
tower. It was in the tower that she became a Christian and refused to worship
her father’s gods. He then had her be beaten by 12 men. When she did not
denounce her faith, he sent her to prison. He had then decided she was into
witchcraft after many attempts at torturing her. They tied a rock to her neck
and threw her in the sea then as punishment. It was in the sea that God came
down and baptized her. When she came
back to land, her father demanded she be beheaded. The next day, he was found
dead. They made several attempts to kill her with boiling water, and even
poisonous snakes. She even brought the snake charmer back to life after it
killed him instead of her. They cut out her tongue then, but she was still
fine. It was then they finally shot her where she gave her soul up to God.
She was of royal blood, her father was a Duke. This story
was extremely confusing. From what I can tell she defeated a dragon and brought
a man back to life. Other than that, I think this story was scattered and
didn’t flow very well. I think Saint Martha was a great woman, and this story
just doesn’t do her justice.
Theodora was rich and had a husband. The devil tempter her
many times to cheat on her husband, and wasn’t successful until he had the help
of a witch. The witch told her that God only sees what happens during the
daytime, and that she could have an affair during the night. So she had an
affair, and when she found out that God sees all, she was very upset. She was
so upset; she cut off her hair and disguised herself as a man in a monastery.
Her husband was very upset at her absence and so an angel appeared to him and
told him where she was.
Theodora made several miracles and rejected the devil. While
in the monastery, a woman declared that Theodora was the father of her child.
After the child was born, it was sent to the monastery to him, he was kicked
out and took care of the child for seven years. After that she went through
many trials with the devil, through which prayer got her out of each time. The
monks finally let her back into the monastery with the child, where they lived
for an additional two years. It was there that she gave her spirit up to God,
and they discovered she was a woman after taking up the body.
This was a rather confusing story. People were trying to
kill Daria because of her faith. One person came to deflower her, but a lion
took him and listened to Daria. She had the lion let him go, and the man became
a Christian right after. Other men came to get her, and they too were
converted. She was finally buried alive and that’s how she became a martyr.
She was a very faithful Christian from the day she was born.
She didn’t want to get married, but she did. She didn’t want to give up her
virginity to him, and explained to him that an angel appears to her, and that
it would be a sin for them to have sex. She then asks him to go be baptized and
convert to Christianity. After he
returned from his baptism, he saw an angel speaking with Cecilia and the angel
told them that they should keep their bodies clean (not to have sex). Next,
they converted their brother Tyburtis. They went around converting many people.
Her husband and brother would not worship the idols of Almachius, and were
beheaded for that reason since they were Christan. Then Almachius tried to
behead Cecilia after she wouldn’t either. They tried to slice her head off
three times but it wouldn’t come off. She lay there for three days half alive,
half dead until she finally died.
Her father kept her locked up in a tower to hide her from
men. She blessed some water which had holy powers of healing for those that
believed in God. She helped with the construction of her tower, by making the
men make three windows. Her father was furious for he had instructed them to make
only two. Barbara explained that she wanted three, one for the Father, the Son,
and the other for the Holy Spirit. Her father, then drew his sword and tried to
strike her, but God took care of her and took her to the mountains. Her father
chased after her. He found her and imprisoned her. He had her tortured and
beaten bloody. God then came to her and healed her body. She was tortured and
killed. And then God struck fire down from heaven and killed her cruel father.
